Parisa
A. Ariya, Distinguished James McGill Professor, in
Atmospheric and oceanic sciences, and Chemistry /
Professeure distinguée James McGill en sciences
atmosphériques et océaniques et en chimie.
- Dr. Parissa Ariya is a leading atmospheric
chemist whose research
has transformed understanding of air pollution, aerosols, and toxic
compounds. Over her 28-year career, Dr. Ariya has pioneered studies on
mercury and halogen chemistry in cold environments, developed
innovative pollutant detection technologies, and advised international
bodies on environmental policy.
- Her cutting-edge research is foundational
in the growing field of
air-pollution meteorology, and her work has opened the door for
numerous subsequent studies. Dr. Ariya has advised the Canadian
government in developing and updating policies and legislation on the
environment, such as the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, and
policies on human health and toxic contaminations, including the
International Mercury Treaty.
- With over 170 publications and extensive
mentorship, Dr. Ariya has
shaped air-pollution meteorology in Canada and globally, earning major
scientific awards and recognition for her public engagement. Dr. Ariya
is also passionate and dedicated to developing future generations of
scientists and researchers.
