Sophia Johannessen

Dr. Sophia Johannessen is a Research Scientist at the DFO Institute of Ocean Sciences in Sidney, B. C. and holds an Adjunct appointment in the Department of Geography at the University of Victoria. She completed a B. Sc.(Hon.) in Geology and Oceanography at UBC in 1994 and a Ph. D. in Oceanography with Dr. W. L. Miller at Dalhousie University in 2000.

Dr. Johannessen studies carbon cycling, climate change, and contaminants, from photochemical processes at the top of the ocean to the burial and reworking of contaminants at the bottom. Her recent projects include studies of climate change and short-term variability in the Strait of Georgia; carbon dioxide in surface waters of the North Pacific; and contaminants, including mercury, PCBs and brominated flame retardants in sediments of the Strait of Georgia and Hudson Bay. Dr. Johannessen has worked in the Mid-Atlantic Bight, the Bering Sea, the Arctic Ocean, and the Strait of Georgia.
