150th Anniversary of Weather Observing, 1990

Notes:

1.  This anniversary was celebrated by issuing a special postage stamp to recognize the 150th anniversary of weather observing in Canada.  This was only the second Canadian postage stamp ever issued which had meteorology as its subject.  This stamp may be seen here (stamp #2) in several versions including a copy of the first day of issue cover.

2.  Called Weather 150, the anniversary was the subject of three separate Zephyr articles in 1990:

a) on pages 1 and 3 of February / March 1990 edition

b) on pages 4 and 5 of July / August 1990 edition

c) on pages 1 and 2 of November / December 1990 edition

3.  On September 6th, 1990 a cake cutting was held in Downsview commemorated the Weather 150 anniversary.

4.  A special pin to commemorate Weather 150 was struck and an image is shown on this page.  Many of the pins were given to up to 400 volunteer climate observers as a thank you for their work.

5.  Following a September meeting ot the AES Management Committee in Toronto, a Black Tie Dinner for the members was held at the U of T Faculty Club.  This event was one of many in celebration of 150 Years of Weather Observing in Canada.

6.  Finally, two photos from an album about weather observing are seen below.  This album was in the MSC Library but was lost during the closing of HQs offices at 4905 Dufferin Street in the 2010s.
